FRANKFORT, Ky. — Southside Elementary is one of 18 Kentucky schools that will send to students to arts events and performances with funds from a Kentucky Arts Council TranspARTation grant.

The grants provide funding to Kentucky classrooms for transportation to and from live arts events. Grants are based on the mileage from the school building to the arts organization or performance venue and the number of buses necessary.

Southside Principal Renee Maynard said taking students on field trips was more expensive than ever.

“It takes hundreds of dollars just to take a bus as far as Pikeville,” she said. “So we appreciate the grant as an opportunity to take classes to the University of Pikeville and the Mountain Arts Center.”

“The arts play an important and well-documented role in the comprehensive education experience,” said Lori Meadows, executive director of the Arts Council. “We are so glad schools across the state are taking advantage of this funding opportunity to further enrich education through the arts. The Kentucky Arts Council, the state arts agency, supports educational field trips with state tax dollars and federal funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.”

Southsides’s TranspARTation grantsSouthside was for $2,256.
