Robert Sparks Jr., 86, of Wharncliffe, , formerly of Panther, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 14, 2012, from Williamson Memorial Hospital.


Born on November 25, 1925, at Panther, he was the son of the late Robert and Missouri Prater Sparks.


In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his first wife Lacey Sparks; two brothers, Arthur H. Sparks and Thomas Lee Sparks; and sister Maggie Swafford.


In addition to being a loving husband, brother, uncle, grandfather, great grandfather and a great friend to all, Robert was retired having worked as a coal miner and was a member of the First assembly of God of Matewan.


Those left to love and cherish the memory of Robert and to mourn his passing, include his wife of 13 years, Virginia Testerman Sparks; his daughters, Connie Sparks Justice; his caregiver,Carol Blevins; sons the Rev. Lowell Sparks, Carl Sparks, and Charles Sparks; brother James Sparks of Highpoint, N.C.; and sisters Mary Lou Dawson of Dobson, N.C., Goldie Dotson of Varney; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; Robert is also survived by special caregivers Elaine Sparks, Gail and Wayne Browning, and Lou Blankenship.


Honoring services will be held on Wednesday, October 17, at 11 a.m. at the Assembly of God at North Matewan, with the Revs. Diamond Carter and Fred Taylor officiating. Burial will follow at the Family Cemetery at Beech Creek. The family will begin receiving friends on Tuesday, October 16, at the church from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m.


Arrangements are under the direction of Chambers Funeral Services, Inc., of Matewan.
