Curtis Lee Harris, 60, of Freeburn, Ky., departed this life on Friday, October 12, 2012 at the Pikeville Medical Center of Pikeville, Ky.
Born June 9, 1952, in Matewan, Curtis was the son of the late Oliver and Virginia Gertrude Jude Harris.
In addition to his parents, Curtis is preceded in death by his sisters, Wilma Casey and Mable Crum; brother Luther Harris; and brother-in-law Ira Junior Mapes.
In addition to being a loving husband, father, brother, friend, and neighbor, Curtis was retired, having worked as a coal miner. Curtis will be fondly remembered by those who held him close for his loving demeanor, kind personality, and his sense of humor. Curtis’ bravery and his ability to smile through the pain, will remain a memory of strength and fortitude to all who knew him. He also was a member of the Church of God In Jesus Name of Phelps, Ky.
He leaves to honor his loving memory and mourn his passing his loving wife, Bonnie Mapes Harris of Freeburn; daughter Autumn Harris of Freeburn; brothers Rev. Opie (the late Norma Lee) Harris of Phelps; Oliver “Buddy” (Jean) Harris of Matewan; Larry (Charlene) Harris of Freeburn; brothers-in-law Billy Mapes, Danny (Linda Kay) Mapes, Randy (Dorothy) Mapes, Robert (Alice) Mapes; sister Bessie (the late Arthur) Dixon of Red Jacket; sisters-in-law Susie (Ron) Grossl, Penny (Gary) Hager, Ellen (Jimmy) Charles, Judy Mapes, and Kaye (Benny) Hurley. Curtis is also survived by lifelong friend, Willie Smith; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Honoring services will be conducted Monday, October 15, at noon at the Church of God In Jesus Name of Phelps, with Pastor Opie Harris and the Revs. James Allen and David Norman officiating. Burial will follow at the Freeburn Cemetery at Barn Hollow of Freeburn. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. The family will begin receiving friends on Saturday, October 13, and Sunday, October 14, at the Church at 6 p.m. with services nightly at 7 p.m.
