RED JACKET – Mingo Central took a hard loss last week at Wayne. Freshman quarterback Stevie Hammond suffered a back injury and will be out for the year.
Senior Joe Hall, a key on defense, suffered a concussion and will be out for this week’s homecoming game with Tolsia at James H. “Buck” Harless Stadium.
Senior Matt Lester will take over as the signal caller for Coach Yogi Kinder and the Miners. Mingo Central will depend heavily on all-state tailback Joe May, who is the team’s leading rusher. May has also scored 12 touchdowns this season.
Alex “Booger” Lee bounced back from an ankle injury and returned a punt for a TD last week at Wayne. That was one of the few bright spots for Mingo Central in that loss.
Garth Simpkins and Drew Kirk continue to lead a young offensive line and defense for MCHS.
Despite the loss to Wayne, the Miners were still ranked No. 11 in the SSAC poll this week in Class AA. Tolsia, who comes in at 3-3, is ranked No. 16 this week. Coach Mike Smith has turned the Rebels around, after a difficult season a year ago. The Rebels lost a tough game on the road at Tug Valley two weeks ago, but bounced back last Friday to beat a good Sissonville team.
A late 4th quarter comeback over Fairland, Ohio earlier in the season was perhaps the turning point for Tolsia. They got that win and that seems to have turned the tide for the Rebels.
Kickoff for the game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
