HUNTINGTON – On Oct. 12, the Marshall men’s basketball team will kick off the season with its annual Thundering Herd Madness event held at the Cam Henderson Center.

Fans will be introduced to third-year head coach Tom Herrion and his squad which finished last season with a 21-14 record and an appearance in the National Invitational Tournament. The gates will open at 7 p.m. and player introductions will kick off the event at 8 p.m.

The rest of the night will consist of a two-ball competition, slam dunk contest and a 20-minute scrimmage. New Marshall women’s basketball coach Matt Daniel will be on hand to introduce his 2012-13 squad. There will also be several spectator competitions that will give several lucky Marshall fans the opportunity to win basketball season tickets, $500 worth of gasoline, a Marshall basketball gift package, along with cold hard cash.

“We are very excited to kick off the 2012-13 season with our annual Thundering Herd Madness,” Herrion said. “This event gives our fans its first opportunity to see our team. Herd Madness will be the start of what I think will be a very special season for our team.”

Upon the completion of the approximately 75-minute event, fans will have the opportunity to get autographs from the Marshall players and coaches. A special Marshall basketball promotional item will be distributed at the event for all fans.

Herd Madness serves as a fundraiser with proceeds going to the Marshall Tip-Off club (a division of the Big Green Scholarship Foundation). All tickets are $5 and seating is general admission throughout the entire arena. All Marshall students will be admitted free of charge by presenting a valid MU student ID at the student entrance located on the upper concourse level on the south side of the building.

Tickets can be purchased by calling 800-THE-HERD or by going online to www.HerdZone.com.

That same evening, the Marshall volleyball team will be facing Conference USA opponent Rice at 5:30. All fans who purchase a ticket to Thundering Herd Madness will be admitted to the volleyball game free of charge.

Marshall athletics will also be selling season tickets starting at 4:30 p.m. A select-a-seat process will be used for any remaining unsold season tickets.
