WILLIAMSON - A Kermit resident was transported to a local hospital following a two-car accident that occurred at approximately 11 a.m. Thursday morning, at the West Williamson exit off of U.S. 119.

Eye witnesses Nick and Marlanea Lovich told the Daily News they were preparing to pull from the West Williamson exit onto U.S. 119 when traffic cleared. However, before this could happen, a 2006 Buick Lacrosse traveling northbound on the four-lane that was operated by Lucian Brown of West Williamson, and allegedly pulled across U.S. 119 directly into the path of a 2006 Mitsubishi Eclipse.

The driver, Maxine Maynard, of Kermit, tried to avoid the collision but was not successful in her attempt and the vehicles made impact, with Maynard’s car coming to rest against the hillside. The airbags in both cars deployed, and the drivers said they were wearing seatbelts.

According to Williamson Patrolman D. Paige, Maynard did not have any obvious injuries but was said to have been complaining of head, neck and back pain. She was transported to the Williamson Memorial Hospital by STAT Ambulance. Brown refused medical treatment, stating he was not injured. Both vehicles sustained moderate to severe damage as a result of the collision.

The Williamson Fire Department responded with two trucks and Medic One Ambulance, and a total of nine firefighters, including Chief Jerry Mounts. Mingo County Emergency Services Director Jerrod Fletcher also provided assistance at the scene, as well as Mingo County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Randy Hatfield.
