KERMIT - The Town of Kermit invites the public to celebrate the change season at their annual Fall Festival this weekend.
Mayor Johnny Linville told the Daily News the day would be filled with fun and entertainment, beginning at 10 a.m.
At that time, a dedication will be held for a memorial to eleven miners who died in the Burning Springs Collieries disaster.
On Jan. 18, 1951, the No. 1 Mine at the Kermit Burning Springs Collieries Company exploded. Eleven men died in the disaster, including two fathers and their sons and a set of brothers.
The Town is creating a small park at the north end of Kermit on U.S. 52, Linville said.
“Norfolk Southern has donated a caboose, and we are going to install a nice memorial and plaque and have an information center,” he said. “We’re going to have picnic tables, it will be a nice tribute to those miners.”
The Fall Festival parade starts at 11 a.m., with a pet show at 2 p.m.
The Town is providing inflatables for kids, vendors will be on hand selling food, and entertainment will be provided, with both gospel and bluegrass music, played live.
Mayor Linville said the festival lasts until 5 p.m., and invites everyone to Kermit Saturday.
