NAUGATUCK – Tug Valley improved to 2-1 on the season after a hard-fought 34-28 defeat of Mt. View in their first game of the season a Bob Brewer Field in Naugatuck.
The Panthers struck first as senior signal caller Mikey Newsome hit Corey Dillon on a 6-yard pass with 8:37 left in the opening quarter. David Runyon ran in for the 2-point conversion to give the home team an 8-0 lead.
Mt. View capped a nice drive and scored with 1:46 left in the 1st quarter as Maurice Brown hit paydirt on a 4-yard run. Brown’s conversion tied it at 8-8.
TVHS regained the lead in the second at the 5:19 mark as Dillon recovered a fumble in the end zone for a TD. A Newsome to Runyon pass gave the Panthers a 16-8 lead. That’s was the score heading into the dressing room at the half.
In the 3rd quarter TVHS saw Aaron Muncy get in at the 5:54 mark on a 3-yard run. The conversion run failed, but the Panthers had a 22-8 lead.
The Knight’s got a touchdown pass from Teddy Hazzard to LaQuell Martin for 14 yards. The run failed, and the Tug Valley lead was 22-14.
With 1:09 left in the 3rd quarter, Newsome connected with Muncy on a 37-yard pass. The conversion failed, but TVHS had a 28-14 advantage.
Mt. View fought back in the final quarter. Hazzard hit Maurice Brown for a 10 -yard TD pass. The conversion pass was no good, but the visitors cut the lead to 28-20.
Mt. View tied the game with 6:59 left in the 4th quarter as Hazzard connected again with Brown for a 15-yard score. Brown got a 2-point conversion via a fumble recovery to tie the game up at 28-all.
The Panther’s got the winning touchdown with 1:58 remaining in the game as Mikey Newsome hooked up with Dillon on a 15-yard pass. The conversion failed, but Tug Valley held on for the win.
Tug Valley is will play host to Twin Valley, Va. this Friday.
The Panthers had 228 total yards on offense. Rushing wise, Muncy had 15 carries for 72 yards, Runyon 14 carries for 40, and Jessie Mays –7 tries for 13 yards. Muncy caught four passes for 93 yards, while Dillon had a pair of receptions for 21 yards, and two TDs.
Newsome –was 6-for-17 passing for 114 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.
Ryan Preece led Tug Valley with tackles, Runyon had six tackles, and a fumble recovery and Isaac Parsley six tackles and a sack, while Mays and Muncy also had sacks and Newsome an interception for head coach Tony Clusky’s squad.
