SIDNEY, Ky. - Students at Bevins Elementary got a hands on science lesson when the Kentucky Department of Agriculture Mobile Science Activity Center visited the school Wednesday.
Matthew Hayes, the Program Coordinator for the Center, held a demonstration that included helping students make their own lip balm from soybean oil and beeswax.
“Our main focus is on students in the third, fourth and fifth grades,” Hayes said. “But we have activities for kindergarten through eighth grade. All our activities are core related.”
Hayes explained the Center, a 8 by 42 foot trailer, travels all over the eastern part of the state, teaching students where their food comes from.
“We have activities that show how plastic products are made from corn, we have a ‘germ-buster’ program, we make glue, ice cream, cookies … we let the teacher choose what the kids learn about.”
Hayes said he is working with other schools in the county to schedule visits.
