Cue Hank Williams, Jr. “Are you ready for some football!”

For those who have had withdrawal from watching football, your weekend is finally here.

Actually, some schools in Kentucky started their season last weekend. In fact, some schools in the Bluegrass State will have played almost a third of their regular season schedule before September. But that’s a story for another day.

For local fans, they will be able to go out this Friday or Saturday and see their favorite high school teams.

Belfry, Mingo Central and Tug Valley all open up on Friday night. (The Williamson Daily News will have previews of those games in Friday’s edition.)

Belfry High School will host the Pike County Bowl on Friday night. That will feature a doubleheader with the Pirates in the nightcap taking on Harrison County. Phelps will take on Pike Central in the first game, which is scheduled to kickoff at 6:05 p.m.

Mingo Central will travel to New Richmond to take on Wyoming East. This is the second season for the new consolidated school.

Tug Valley also hits the road for their opener. They will travel to Seth in Boone County to take on the Sherman Tide.

Meanwhile Sheldon Clark, which won their opener, will hit the road again taking on the Prestonsburg Blackcats.

There are some very talented prep players in the area. So fans should be treated to some great local football games this season.

As for the colleges that most local fans follow, those schools won’t start until next week. The last in the series of the Coal Bowl between West Virginia and Marshall will be played on Saturday, September 1 in Morgantown. Kentucky will continue their rivalry with Louisville on that same day.

The UPike Bears will open up this Saturday at Bluefield College in Bluefield, Virginia.

The NFL will get into full swing on Sunday, September 9.

Short Stuff: I read in the Athlon Sports publication that Louisville Trinity, a 6A school, is rated as the number one high school team in the country. They split last year’s mythical prep title with Don Bosco Prep in Ramsey, New Jersey.

… Vernon Davis, a freshman cornerback at Miami (Fla.), will get out of his scholarship and transfer to West Virginia, according to MetroNews. Davis is a three-star recruit. He will have to sit out a year due to transfer rules but planned on redshirting at Miami this season. WVU had recruited Davis out of high school.

…. George Barker, the Chapmanville Regional High School football coach, was named recently to replace the retiring Danny Godby as the new CRHS athletics director.

… And speaking of football – I’m sure many of you are already getting your rosters ready for fantasy football leagues. Most leagues have already drafted or will draft in the coming days. Good luck …
