The Williamson Redevelopment Authority is hosting two “Pick Your Own” events at the Mingo County Orchard. The event will be open to the public, and volunteers can keep 50 percent of what they harvest.

Each year since 2000, the United States Department of Agriculture has proclaimed one week in August as National Farmers Market Week.

This year, the celebratory week falls on August 5-11. In spirit of the National event, Williamson Redevelopment Authority (WRA) is proud to announce several upcoming events and opportunities.

Recently, the Williamson Farmer’s Market moved to Second Avenue and Vinson Street, and has had a successful couple of months at its new home. The lot has provided ample space and has proved to be more convenient for customers, who have been loyally showing up every Saturday.

While most of the goods come primarily from local growers and farmers, some of the produce that is sold at the market comes directly from the Mingo County Orchard. At this time, the Orchard has bountiful pears, apples, and grapes ready for harvesting. For the next two weeks, the WRA invites community members to come to the orchard and pick with us. We are thankful to the Tug Valley Chamber of Commerce and neighbors in Logan for presenting the “Pick Your Own” idea.

There will be two chances to “Pick Your Own Fruit” at Mingo County Orchard on Thursday, August 9^th and again next week, on August 16. If you are interested, our group will meet each Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall. Volunteers are welcome to keep half of the produce that is harvested, while the remaining half will be donated to the Williamson Farmer’s Market.
