Should Manchin endorse Obama?

To the editor:

I’d like to list three reasons why Sen. Joe Manchin cannot, with integrity and in good conscience, endorse President Barack Obama for reelection:

1. President Obama is against coal. To endorse him is to betray our state.

2. President Obama doesn’t secure the blessings of liberty to our prosperity. To endorse him Manchin would violate his oath of office.

3. President Obama supports gay marriage. To endorse him goes against Manchin’s Catholic faith and the laws of nature and of nature’s God.

His decision should be simple, a “no brainer.”

The earlier two comments are comments relying on christian authority and they have differing opions from the same higher authority.

Anyone's religion must be left to his or her conviction and conscience with the right to exercise it as these may dictate. This right in its nature is an unalienable right because people's opinions, depending only on the evidence contemplated by their own minds, cannot follow the dictates of others. As such, religion serves no useful purpose for the issues raised in the editorial.

Let your christianity enter your politics now then be silent when mormon-republican politics goes against the tenets of your christian sect and those core values of West Virginia voters that have makes our state great.

I'd like to tell you now what Jesus said about homosexuality. "Love thy neighbor." There are many instances in the bible where the writer of that passage discusses homosexuality as abominable, but in none of those passages is the author quoting God, merely his own personal opinion. You are entitled to your opinion, but the LGBT community is entitled to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Denying them that last right by preventing them from marrying eachother is very unamerican. That said, your first two points are spot on.

West Virginia has depended on primarily ONE industry Coal and the consequences has been disasterous. High unemployment and extreme poverty are the result. The people of this wonderful state owe it to their children and grand-children to stop this cycle of economic failure. Stop blaming President Obama for problems you should have confronted years ago. Whether or not the President is re-elected or not, West Virginia will continue to have the same economic problems that have plagued her down through the years unless the good citizens of this beautiful state change things with their vote. Oh, by the way did anyone bother to read about the impact natural gas is having on the coal fields? Not that it will change any opinions-just asking.
