Head football coach Dana Holgorsen and his staff picked up a talented east coast playmaker Monday evening when 2013 running back Zaire Williams (Sicklerville, N.J. / Timber Creek) announced he will be attending WVU.
Williams made the announcement at his high school. WVU running backs coach Robert Gillespie was the lead recruiter.
The 5’11” 188-pound Williams is labeled a high three-star prospect by Rivals.com and is ranked as the 31st overall running back in the nation. He had collected additional BCS offers from Connecticut, Iowa, Pitt, Purdue, Temple and Wisconsin.
Williams transferred to Timber Creek Regional High in February from Cherokee High School. Last season, he amassed 1,621 yards and 28 touchdowns for the Chiefs, and he racked up over 1,200 of those yards during his final five games, including a 385-yard effort against Cherry Hill East.
The New Jersey product has twice visited WVU’s campus, most recently in mid-June for a 7-on-7 tournament with his teammates. He has also scheduled an official visit to Morgantown for Sep 1st when the Mountaineers battle in-state foe Marshall during college football’s opening weekend.
One of Williams’ Timber Creek teammates, Dajuan Drennon, is also high on the Mountaineers, in addition to schools such as Notre Dame, Kentucky, USC and North Carolina. All five programs have offered Drennon.
