Irene W. Steele, 80, of North Matewan, passed away Wednesday, May 23, 2012, at the Cabell-Huntington Hospital in Huntington.

Born February 9, 1932, in Red Jacket, she was the daughter of the late Ervin J. and Juanita Milam Wakeland.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Willis Steele; and three brothers, Bud, Robert and David Wakeland.

Irene worked at the Matewan National Bank for several years and was the owner and operator of the Flower Pot of Steeles in Matewan that served the Matewan and surrounding area for many years. She was of the Church of Christ faith.

Survivors include two daughters, Anita (Jeff) Kimble of Chattaroy, and Patricia Hill of Huntington; one brother, Tom (Nancy) Wakeland of Dunedin, Fla.; two sisters, Patricia (Bob) Wilson and Veda (Mike) Noble both of Columbus, Ohio; her grandchildren, Jenny (Jim) Grubbs, Becky (Eric) Steele, Adam (Necha) Hill, Katie Fletcher, Theresa (Larry) Akers, and Cindy (Sam) Holt; her great-grandchildren, Ciara Grubbs, Derrick Grubbs, Cross Stanley, Seth Grubbs, Jessie Grubbs, Zack Steele, Mia Hill, Lexi Hill, Joe (Katie) Akers, Larry (Michelle) Akers Jr., and Anthony Akers; her great-great-grandchildren Payton Steele, Sydne` Lambert, Nathaniel Akers, and Kaylee Akers; her best friends, Joan White, Jeanette Hatfield, Linda White; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, May 29, at noon from the Hatfield Funeral Chapel at Toler, Ky., with Evang. Gene Clemons officiating. Entombment will follow in the Steele Family Mausoleum at Matewan. Honorary pallbearers will be Fred Estepp, Freddie Carroll, Joe Kinder, Jimmy Christian, Velton Hunt, Randy “Butter” Sullivan, Roy Lee Rolen, Paul Akers, and David Wilson. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
