Mingo Central will have a representative in the state track championships next weekend in Charleston.

Junior Joe May has qualified for both the 100 yard dash and the 200 yard dash after competing in the Class AA, Region 4 track meet, according to his coach Brad Webb.

May has only been running track for a few weeks. He has been a standout on the football teams for both Matewan and now Mingo Central.

“To have never ran track before, and to already being going to the state meet, that is quite remarkable,” Webb said. “He is a very talented athlete.”

The speedy May will become the first student athlete from Mingo Central High School to compete in a state event.

The state track meet will be held at Laidley Field in Charleston on Friday and Saturday, May 17-18.
