GILBERT – The Mingo Central Miners won their regular season finale this past Saturday over Westside 4-3 at the Gilbert baseball field.

Chris Atkins had a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the 7th to help the Miners win the game.

Austin Trent went a perfect 4-for4 to lead the hit parade for MCHS. Josh May and Atkins each had a pair of hits, while Austin Reed, Jacob Staton and Gabe Vinson each smacked doubles.

Matt Lester, Reed and John May also had a base hit for the Miners. Atkins brought in the game winning run in

Ashton Cline was the winning hurler in relief. Freshman Seth Collins was the starter and Garth Simpkins also saw action on the mound for head coach Walt Cline.

“It was nice to get the kids back on the field and get a game in before tournament,” Cline said. “ Collins started and pitched four strong innings for his first varsity start. Simpkins pitched 2 scoreless innings and Ashton Cline threw the last inning to get some work before sectional to pick up the win.”

“Austin Trent continued his hot hitting with four hits as did Josh May with 2 hits,” Cline said.

“All the drama was saved for the last inning. Westside picked up two runs to tie the game in the top of the 7th inning. Josh May led off our part of the seventh with a single and B.J. Warden came in as a courtesy runner,” Cline said. “Vinson flew out to center for the first out, then Trent singled to move B. J. over to second base. Ashton Cline struck out for the second out of the inning and then Chris (Atkins) singled on a 1-2 pitch to score Warden to end the game.”

“The kids needed the win to get back on track and get focused for sectionals,” Cline added.
