Belfry tops Phelps in district action

GOODY, Ky. - The Belfry Pirates sealed up the number one seed in the 60th District with a 14-5 home victory over the Phelps Hornets Monday night at Massey Energy Field at Goody, Ky.

Phelps took a 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning after Tyler Stump singled and scored on a single by Zack Avina. Avina scored on a 2-out RBI double by Austin Mayhorn.

Belfry quickly went ahead 4-2 in the bottom of the 1st frame as Zack Francisco walked and then stole second base. With two outs, Joey Duty singled in Francisco. Zac Fields then singled in another run. The other two Pirates runs were scored on errors.

Belfry broke the game open in the 3rd inning. Duty and Zac Fields both singled and Jared Masters was hit by a pitch to load bases with no one out. Duty scored on a grounder to shortstop by Keegan Fields. Then with two outs, Reed Williamson singled in Zac Fields. Dotson reached safely on an error by the center fielder, and both Masters and Williamson scored two more Belfry runs.

Then Francisco singled and Dotson scored on a wild pitch and BHS led 9-2

In the Belfry 5th inning Sean Hurley, started a rally by drawing a walk. Then Howie Dotson was safe at first base on a fielder’s choice.

After a wild pitch and passed ball which put the runners in scoring position, Francisco got an RBI sacrifice fly.

Tyler Williams then walked and eventually scored on Zac Fields’ single. The Pirates took an 11-2 lead at that point.

Chris Stump singled in two more runs for the Hornets in the top of the 6th inning. C. J. Dotson reached base on a fielder’s choice and eventually scored on a wild pitch. He went to second on another wild pitch and stole third base.

Belfry got those runs back in the bottom of the 6th frame after Keaton Taylor singled, followed by a base hit by Hurley. Dotson then walked to load the bases. Taylor then scored on a wild pitch.

As the inning continued, Williams was safe at first on a fielder’s choice, and both Hurley and Dotson scored.

Sophomore Zac Fields led Belfry in hitting going 3-for-3.

Keegan Fields got the mound win for Belfry. The Pirates are now 18-7 on the season. Mayhorn took the loss for the Hornets. Phelps is now 2-11 this season.
