WILLIAMSON - A man was arrested yesterday for allegedly breaking into a senior citizen’s Williamson home and stealing a variety of items.
Williamson Chief of Police C.D. Rockel told the Daily News that William Oscar “Chilly” Stanley, 42, of Williamson, was arrested by himself and Patrolman D.L. Paige and charged with daytime burglary and petit larceny.
“I got a call around 10 a.m.,” Rockel said. “A local coin collector asked if I was looking for stolen coins. I told him no, but asked what was going on.”
The coin collector, whose name was not given, said that Stanley had called him, asking if he was interested in some old coins. The coin collector, who apparently thought it unusual for Stanley to be in possession of such items, then called Rockel.
Rockel and Paige went to Stanley’s residence in Williamson and, according to the chief, they simply asked him if he had stolen the coins.
“He said that he had, and when I asked for them, he went and got them,” Rockel said.
After a brief interview with Stanley, he revealed to the chief where he had stolen the coins from - an 80-year-old man’s house within the city.
Stanley, Rockel said, had been performing a variety chores for the senior citizen, such as mowing his grass. Through those odd jobs, he discovered the man’s collection of coins. On April 22, Rockel said Stanley broke into the man’s house.
“He told us that he kicked in the back door and stole around 300 coins: old wheat pennies, liberty dimes, half dollars, silver dollars, buffalo nickels, foreign money, military scrip and a wristwatch,” Rockel said. “He ransacked the house and went through the man’s medicine cabinet, but didn’t find anything but blood pressure pills.”
The 80-year-old man, whose name was also not given, had recently been placed in a nursing home, Rockel said. The home is now utilized by the man’s brother a few days every week, the chief said.
Stanley told the chief that he took the items to his home and then attempted to sell them. He also confessed to having committed the crime for his drug habit.
Stanley, who was already on parole for having been charged with receiving stolen property in Pike County, Ky., was arraigned before Magistrate Dallas Toler and is currently lodged at the Southwestern Regional Jail, in Holden on a $5,500 bail.
