Belfry wins pair in JVS Tourney

GOODY, Ky. – Belfry won a couple of games over the weekend in the Jim Vaughn Smith Invitational tournament played a Massey Energy Field at Goody, Ky.

Belfry 7, Pikeville 3

Senior Tyler Williams pitched a complete game and also smacked three hits, including a pair of doubles to lead the Pirates to the win.

In the 1st inning, Pikeville’s Randy Maynard doubled and scored on 2-out single by Jacob Hamilton. Belfry also scored with two outs in the 1st frame after Tyler Williams doubled. Keaton Taylor came in as a courtesy runner and Joey Duty singled to the tie the game, scoring Taylor.

Pikeville got another run in the 2nd inning after J. P. Coleman singled, advanced to 2nd base on a groundout and he scored on single by Maynard.

The Panthers got a leadoff triple by Gavin Miller in the 3rd inning and then scored on single by Hamilton.

In the 3rd frame, Belfry started the inning with four straight hits by Zack Francisco (double), Williams had an RBI single, Duty singled and Zac Fields had an RBI single. Duty scored on a wild pitch and Jared Masters got an RBI sacrifice fly scoring Fields.

In the Belfry 4th inning Reed Williamson led off with walk and scored on Williams double. In the 5th inning Keegan Fields led off with walk, and Taylor went in as a pinch runner eventually scoring on Howie Dotson single.

Dotson, who is batting .388 and Duty each had 2 hits each. Williams got the win on the mound striking out eight batters and only walking one. The losing pitcher was Jake Burke. The win improved Belfry to 14-6, while Pikeville dropped to 13-4.

Belfry 7, East Ridge 3

Belfry got two runs in the 3rd inning Keegan Fields doubled (Keaton Taylor came in as a courtesy runner) and Sean Hurley reached on an error. Howie Dotson had an RBI single to bring in Taylor.

Hurley scored on groundout by Zack Francisco, while Dotson was thrown out trying to steal home.

In the Belfry 5th inning, Jared Masters and Fields walked (Cameron Johnson came in a s a pinch runner for Fields). With two outs, Dotson doubled in both runners.

In the 6th inning Belfry’s Joey Duty singled, Reed Wiliamson came in as a pinch runner for Duty and Williamson scored on fielder’s choice by Jared Masters 9safe on E6)

Keegan Fields was then hit by a pitch. With Madison Ghormley batting, Masters and Fields both scored on an error by the East Ridge right fielder.

Zac Fields got the win in relief, pitching three innings, striking out four and walking one. Kyle Adkins was the losing hurler for the Warriors.
