GOODY, Ky. – The Lady Pirates defeated the Mingo Central Lady Miners 10-0 Thursday evening at Massey Energy Field on the campus of Belfry High School.
The game was originally scheduled to be played at Delbarton as a home game for Mingo Central, but damp grounds forced the game to be moved to Belfry’s home field.
The win made it a clean sweep by Belfry over their new local rival.
Brooke Williamson got the pitching win for the Lady Pirates. She struck out 10 batters. Kaitlyn Lester was the hard luck losing hurler for the Lady Miners.
The game was scoreless after the first two innings, however Belfry took a 4-0 lead in the bottom half of the 3rd inning.
Becca Maynard brought in the first two runs with a single to give her team a 2-0 lead. Williamson and Brooke Branham both scored on the base hit. Then Ashley Miller made it 4-0 with a 2-out single that brought in two of her teammates.
The Lady Pirates scored two more in the bottom of the 4th inning to up the lead at 6-0.
Neither team scored in the 5th frame, but Belfry got four runs in the bottom 6th inning to end the game via the mercy rule. Williamson tripled and scored on a throwing error. She also had an RBI with the hit, scoring Sydni Bogar who had reached on a single.
Miller knocked in the final run on an infield single to end the game.
Mingo Central catcher Taylor Barker smacked a double in the first inning for the Lady Miners, while Lester had a single later in the game. The Lady Miners had the bases loaded in the 4th inning, but were unable to get any runners home.
“We’re playing better,” said BHS head coach Ryan Chapman. “We just need to be consistent and continue to play sound, fundamental softball.”
