GOODY, Ky. - The Belfry Volunteer Fire Department and the Kentucky State Police were dispatched to the scene of an accident on U.S. 119 near the Pirate’s Cove Car Wash Tuesday evening, where one vehicle had sustained moderate front-end damage.

According to information provided by KSP Trooper J.B. Cox, a 2003 Pontiac Vibe operated by Darcey Puckett, of Belfry, was traveling in the north bound lane of U.S. 119 when, according to eye witnesses, a vehicle described as a red or burgundy colored Chevrolet Cobalt pulled directly into the path of Darcey from the car wash exit.

Puckett swerved to avoid colliding with the Colbalt and narrowly escaped impact, only to lose control of the vehicle, crashing into the guardrail. Information told to the Daily News after arriving at the scene first stated that the two cars had collided and that the driver of the Colbalt had fled the scene, but this turned out to not be the story. The unknown driver, however; did leave the scene and failed to stop to check on the condition of Puckett.

The accident remains under investigation by the KSP, and anyone with information regarding the vehicle that left the scene are asked to contact Trooper Cox at the Pikeville Post 9, by calling 606-433-7711.

The Belfry Fire Department responded with two trucks and 10 firefighters. They assisted EMT’s from Appalachian Response with the injured patient who was transported to the Appalachian Regional Hospital with facial contusions, and also cleaned up the debris and fluids that leaked from the damaged Pontiac onto the roadway.
