Belfry splits pair of games

HAZARD, Ky. – Belfry lost a tough road game to Hazard Saturday afternoon by a score of 3-1.
Evan Whittaker pitched a complete game, 3-hitter against the visiting Pirates.
Jared Masters took the tough loss on the mound for Belfry and Coach Michael Hagy. Masters pitched six innings and gave up seven hits, three earned runs, walked four and had nine strikeouts.
Belfry’s Cameron Johnson scored the only Pirate run in the third inning on a wild pitch. Johnson entered the game as a pinch runner.
Belfry’s only three hits, all singles, came from Zack Francisco, Howie Dotson and Reed Williamson. Belfry dropped to 6-4 on the season.

GOODY, Ky. – The Belfry Pirates rolled past Knot Central 13-3 Friday night at Massey Energy Fields.
Masters had three hits to lead the Pirates. His RBI single ended the game in the sixth inning via the mercy rule. Belfry led 10-3 heading into the bottom half of the inning. They scored three runs to end the game.
Zac Fields was the winning pitcher for the Pirates, while A. Mullins was the loser.
After scoring one run in the second, Belfry erupted for eight runs in the fourth inning. Fields reached on error, and then several players hit consecutive RBI singles including Joey Duty, Masters, Madison Ghormley, Dotson, Williamson and Francisco. Francisco had two RBIs with his bases loaded hit.
In the final inning, Eli Huddle had a pinch hit single and scored on a base hit by Masters. Keagan Fields had an RBI single in the frame too.

Mingo Central 20, Tug Valley 2
GILBERT – Mingo Central mercy ruled Tug Valley in the first-ever meeting on the baseball diamond 20-2 last Friday night.
Nick Lee and Josh May each had three hits to lead the barrage by the Miners. Lee had a pair of doubles and five RBIs, while May had two extra base hits and two RBIs. John May, Alex Lee, Gabriel Vinson and Garth Simpkins each had two hits. One of Vinson’s hits is a triple.
Garth Simpkins smacked a home run for Mingo Central, while Joe May and Austin Reed each cracked doubles for Coach Walt Cline.
Jordon Mounts, David Runyon, Trevin Horn and Gabe Varney each had a hit for the Panthers.
Reed was the winning pitcher for MCHS. Seth Collins came in to relieve him with a solid effort.
Varney was the losing pitcher for Tug Valley. The Panthers used several pitchers in the game.
“The kids were excited to get to play this in county game and it showed with their effort. Reed started the game and did a good job, we had a 30 minute lighting delay in the top of the third inning,” Coach Cline said. “Austin had to sit and when we got the game started back he had trouble getting loose and his arm started to get sore. Freshman Seth Collins came in with one out in the third in relief, and did an outstanding job finishing the game. “
“Everyone had an opportunity to get in the game and get an opportunity to hit, it was nice to get everyone involved in the game, with as many close games as we have had lately,” Cline added. Mingo Central, now 5-3 on the season, was scheduled to play at Lincoln County on Monday.

NITRO – Mingo Central lost another tough road game Saturday at Nitro 11-1.
Kaitlyn Lester took the loss on the rubber for the Lady Miners. Kristyn Johnson had the only hit for Mingo Central, a single with an RBI.
Hughes was the winning hurler for Nitro. Hall had three hits for the Lady Wildcats and Hedrick had a triple
