Caitlyn Woolum led all scorers with 11 points in the Lady Pirates’ efforts to overcome the Prestonsburg Blackcats. But a last second shot put the Cats over the Pirates for a 37-36 win. Woolum was exhausted as the senior tried to get her squad the lead. She played almost every position on the court for the Lady Bucs.

GOODY, Ky. — The Belfry Lady Pirates fell to 2-4 on the season after a last second shot by the Lady Blackcats of Prestonsburg sank BHS in a low scoring 37-36 affair.
The Lady Pirates had not led since the 2:12 mark of the opening quarter until Bethany Tackett sank a three to tie the score 35 all with 1:19 left in the game. The senior then sank one of two foul shots to put the Lady Pirates up 36-35 with 46 seconds on the clock.
With 8 seconds remaining, Prestonsburg rebounded a Pirate missed freethrow, threw the ball down court to Kristian Waugh who threw up a prayer that was answered. As the ball went through the net, time expired and the Blackcats won their second straight game to improve to 2-4 on the season.
The Pirates had a couple of chances to increase the one-point lead and put the game out of reach of the Blackcats. The gals connected on only 21.6 percent of their shots in the second half and missed freethrows on two separate trips with time running out in the contest.
BHS senior Caitlyn Woolum led all scorers with 11 points. Woolum also led the Pirates in assists when she had to step into the point guard role after Emily Baker picked up her third foul.
Prestonsburg was led in scoring by Caitlin Kidd’s 9 points. While the Lady Cats were bigger than the Pirates, they only pulled down two more boards in the second half than BHS.
The Pirates forced P’burg into 11 turnovers in the final two quarters of play while turning the rock over five times.
When the game began, Belfry jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead but Prestonsburg tied the game and then grabbed an 11-9 lead going into the second Q; a lead they would hold until the just over a minute in the fourth.
A lot of time ran off the clock before Belfry scored the first points of the fourth quarter. With 5:51 in the Q, Connie Elkins hit a free throw for the Lady Bucs for a 32-29 Prestonsburg lead.
Jackelyn Stack pulled the Pirates within two with 2:27 in the game and Kate Rose hit a freethrow for the Blackcats for the 35-32 lead before Tackett tied the game and then took the lead.
It was a tough loss for the Lady Pirates and a needed win. Belfry is now 1-3 in the Region and is ranked below Prestonsburg in 13 place in the 15th Region.
Belfry now heads to Tennessee for the Smokie Mountain Classic on Dec. 21-23 and will be back home on Dec. 27 for the Mountain Schoolgirl Classic.
