Dear Editor;

It was with great interest that I read the article about Mingo County Commission and the Mingo County Housing Authority starting a bus service for the county. And it was with great surprise that I read that “Hootie” Smith acknowledged me, Sr. Janet Peterworth of Christian Help, for having “operated a transit service for elderly and low income families in the county.”

I want to set the record straight. I, Sr. Janet Peterworth, am the director of ABLE Families, and I have never over these years had any connection with the well run, well organized, much appreciated transit system run by Christian Help. The woman who rose up to meet this serious need in the county nine years ago, and who has singlehandedly raised the funding for it over those years is Sr. M. Brendan Conlon. And she is the director of Christian Help under whose name the vans are seen all over the county. Sr. Brendan is the woman who carefully selected an efficient, effective dispatcher, Ruth Newsome, to schedule the demand-response system and the two dedicated and dependable drivers, Bernice Swisher and Bertha James, to drive the miles to pick up and drop off the regular riders.

While I appreciate being given recognition for starting and operating the Christian Help Transit System, I can take no credit for it. You just got the wrong woman.
