Mingo County teams break top 25 in state

Tug Valley dropped to no. 18 in class AA rankings in the state after suffering their second loss of the year at the hands of South Charleston during the Massey Energy Hatfield-McCoy Shootout Jan. 15. The 9-2 Panthers travel to Chapmanville tonight to battle the 4-5 Tigers.

Williamson fell from 9 to 14 in class A with a 2-6 record. The Pack defeated Man 80-64 Jan. 7 but with WHS on the Hillbillies 8-1 record, Man improved to no. 3 in the state. The Pack travels to Pikeville, Ky. tonight to take on a tough Panther squad.

The Gilbert Lady Lions come in at no. 20 this week in class A with a 5-6 record for the season. Gilbert is undefeated at home and has lost five away games. GHS defeated Williamson 65-43 in the consolation game of the John Preece Tournament Jan. 15 at Tug Valley High School and clashed with the Lady Wolfpack again last night at WHS. Once again the Lady Lions defeated Williamson.

The 3-6 Burch Lady Bulldogs round out the top 25 in the state. Burch played at Van last night. No score was reported.

In class AA the Tug Valley Lady Panthers are ranked 19 in the state with a record of 5-6. Tug is loaded with young talent and look to only improve as the season progresses. Elizabeth Evans was chosen as player of the week. In TV’s loss to Belfry High School, Evans scored 16 points and led the team in steals and assists.
