Curtis Perkins, 73 of Varney, went home to be with Jesus while surrounded by his family Nov. 25, 2010. He was a patient at the Thomas Memorial Hospital.

Curtis was the son of the late Raymond and Sarah Whaley Perkins. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Charles, Ronnie and James and sister, Brenda Barger. He was the son-in-law of the late Kathleen and Lewis Grant Edwards.

He was born July 1, 1937 at Red Jacket. He was a retired coal miner having worked more than 18 years for Old Ben Coal Co. He was a member of the Varney Church of God.

Those left behind to cherish his memories include his wife of more than 53 years, Barbara “Bobbie” Perkins, son Chris (Carolyn) Perkins of Varney; daughters, Rhonda (Brian) Johnson of Louisville, Ky., Ginger (Greg) Simpkins of Beech Creek; brothers, Doug Perkins of Matewan, William Perkins of New Jersey, Keith, Randal, and Danny all of Ohio; sisters, Zelda Sue Seiz of Michigan, Linda Smith, Betty Estep, Barbara Kennedy, Sheila McDonald and Mabel Estep all of Ohio; four grandchildren, Katie and Courtney Johnson, Chelsea and Garth Simpkins; one step-grandchild, Stephanie Ooten and a step-great-grandchild, Shayley Ooten.

He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Funeral services will be held at the Chafin Funeral Home Chapel Sunday, Nov. 28 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Gary “Bo” Starr, Rev. David Fergusson and Rev. Bill Snodgrass officiating. Burial will follow in the Justice-Edwards Cemetery at Varney. Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be at the Funeral Home Chapel Saturday evening from 6-9 p.m.

Marcella Ray, 56 of Rockhouse, Ky., passed away Friday, Nov. 26, 2010 at the Pikeville Medical Center, Pikeville, Ky.

She was born July 31, 1954 at Williamson to the late Claude and Hazel Fields Whitt. She was also preceded in death by her husband John Willie Ray and one brother. She was a homemaker and  of the Church of Christ faith.

Survivors are three sons; Rocky Lee (Lisa) Ray of Rockhouse, Ky., Matthew (Elane) Ray of Dingess and Jimmy Dale (Elizabeth) Ray of Rockhouse, Ky.; six sisters: Rita Ray, Pam Ray, Judy Whitt, Maggie Blankenship, Rebecca Whitt and Delilah "Dee" McQuire, and three grandchildren: Summer Ray, Chloe Ray and Toby Ray.

Funeral services will be conducted at 12 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 30 at R. E. Rogers Funeral Home with Scotty Mullins and others officiating. Burial will follow at the Green Vance Cemetery, Cub Fork, Dingess with family and friends serving as pallbearers.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Sunday and Monday night at R. E. Rogers Funeral Home with special services at 7 p.m. Monday night. R. E.
