Belfry falls in 60th final

LOUISA, Ky. – The Belfry Pirates lost in the 60th District championship game to the Lawrence County Bulldogs 71-53 on Friday night. The game was played at the Lawrence County High School gym in Louisa, Ky., the host site of the tourney.

Despite the loss, Belfry will still advance to the 15th Regional tournament this week which is played at the Expo Center in Pikeville, Ky. The Pirates will take on Pikeville High School on Thursday, March 2, at 8 p.m.

Lawrence County will take on Allen Central, Wednesday, March 1, also at 8 p.m.

Belfry and Lawrence County had split their two regular season games. But this time it was for the district title.

The Bulldogs, led by senior Timmy Dalton, who came into the game averaging 38 points per contest. Dalton’s average is the top per game average in the state of Kentucky and in the United States this season. Dalton fired in 30 points to lead LCHS. He has scored more than 1,100 points this season. Dalton was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

Lawrence County jumped out to a 20-11 first quarter lead and led 46-25 heading into the dressing room at the half.

Junior Isiah Roblee led Belfry with 23 points. Senior guard Austin Woolum added 10 points for the Pirates, while Cameron Catron, Koleston Blankenship and Ryan Jessie each added six.

Jared Wellman added 15 for the Bulldogs, while Tyler Maynard chipped in 11 for the home team,Trey Dotson scored nine and Cam Maynard six.
