WILLIAMSON – The Kermit Lady Blue Devils captured the 2017 Mingo County Girls Basketball Championship by defeating the Lenore Rangers 49 to 40 on Saturday at the historic Williamson Fieldhouse.
The Lenore Rangers held a 21-19 lead at halftime by getting to the stripe and hitting on 11 of 16, but the No. 1 seed Lady Blue Devils went on a third quarter run and took the lead 32-24.
The Rangers tried to cut into the lead, but Kaylea Jo Baisden scored 15 of her game high 22 points to help the Blue Devils win the championship. Lenore was led in scoring by Autumn Davis with 17 points and Alyssa Newsome with 10. Kermit’s Baisden had a game-high 22 and Makayla May’s 14 points led the county champs.
In the consolation game the Gilbert Lady Lions defeated the Lady Wolfpack 35-28 to capture 3rd Place. The Wolfpack was led in scoring by Cassidy Griffey’s 17 points and Kyra Justice’s 9 points. The Lions were led by Scarlet Thomason’s 12 points and Macie Cline’s eight.
Tournament Director and AD, Coach Julius “Boo” Hatcher, said how awesome all three days went and how the teams showed sportsmanship and character on the floor. He would like to thank all of the schools fans, and the Williamson PreK-8 support staff (The BEST), and Williamson Fieldhouse Director, Brandon Ball for making our girls 2017 county tourney a success. Hatcher congratulated the Kermit Lady Blue Devils players and coaching staff and Coach Clyde Farley on their win.
On the opening night of Mingo County Girls’ Basketball Tourney action the Williamson Wolfpack and Gilbert Lions picked up victories. The Wolfpack defeated the Lady Tigers of Matewan 26 to 15. Matewan jumped out to a 6-0 lead, but the Lady Wolfpack pressed their way back with an 8-0 run and never surrendered the lead. Matewan was led by Laikyn Hinkle with 8 points followed by Ragean Marcum with 5 points. Williamson was led by Kyra Justice’s 12 and Cassidy Griffey with 6 points and 5 assists.
In the second game Gilbert fought off a determined Burch Lady Bulldogs trying to reach their 4th straight final, by the score of 33 to 24. Burch was led by Chelsea Mollett with 15 points, while the Lady Lions was led by Scarlet Thomason’s 14 and Caleigh Brown’s 13 points. The Lady Wolfpack would move on to face the #1 seed Kermit Blue Devils, while the Gilbert Lady Lions would face the #2 seed Lenore Rangers.
In county girls semi-final action Thursday night the Lady Lenore Rangers and the Lady Lions of Gilbert went down to the last shot. The Rangers went into the half with 14 to 9 lead, holding the Lions scoreless in the second quarter. With the Rangers and Lions both playing well in the third, the Rangers kept their lead going into the fourth. That’s when the Lions went on a run and took a lead, but a steal and a hoop sealed the win for the Lady Rangers.
Gilbert was led by Scarlet Thomason with 18 points. Lenore’s Alyssa Newsome and Autumn Davis had 13 points each to lead the way for the Rangers.
In the nightcap, Kermit’s Kaylea Jo Baisden led the way over the defending county champs the Wolfpack of Williamson by draining five 3-pointers in the first quarter. The Blue Devils pressed the young Wolfpack into turnovers and was able to convert those into buckets. Wolfpack was led in scoring by Cassidy Griffey’s six points and Isabella Grace’s four points and 10 rebounds.
The Lady Blue Devils were led in scoring by Baisden with 19 points and Makayla May’s 11 points.
The 2017 Mingo County Boys’ Middle School Tournament action will begin this week Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday at the Williamson Fieldhouse.
