Kyle’s Korner ….

The area has three high school teams in the playoffs and all have had great seasons. Good luck to Mingo Central, Belfry and Tug Valley from the staff and management of the Williamson Daily News.

We will have good coverage of the teams as they continue into post season play. All three teams will play on Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

… Former Williamson area resident and WHS graduate Stacy Booten Goff won the Marshall Marathon (overall female division) this past Saturday. She also has run several 5-K’s and has qualified for the Boston Marathon in April 2017.

… West Virginia’s basketball team filled its 5th and final vacancy in the 2017 basketball recruiting class with last weekend’s commitment from a solid junior college small forward.

Wesley Harris chose the Mountaineers over offers from UConn, Arizona, Arizona State, Virginia Tech, Iona and Louisiana Tech. The 6-foot-8 player with inside-out skills recently transferred to Lawson (Ala.) State Community College after averaging 18 points and nine rebounds as a freshman at Northeast Mississippi.

… Sophomore guard C.J. Burks will not play for Marshall during the 2016 fall semester after failing to meet NCAA standards for academic eligibility. His academic status will be reevaluated after the end of the semester. He remains on scholarship and is permitted to practice for the Herd. Marshall’s fall semester ends on Dec. 17.

… The Big 12 Conference has announced that WVU’s Saturday, Nov. 12, Big 12 Conference football game against Texas at Darrell K Royal/Texas Memorial Stadium will be televised on FS1 at noon, ET.

Tickets remain for home games with Oklahoma (Nov. 19) and Baylor (Dec. 3). Tickets can be purchased online at WVUGAME.com or by calling 1-800-WVU GAME.

… The Big 12 Conference has announced that game time and network television coverage for WVU’s Saturday, Nov. 19, football game against Oklahoma at Milan Puskar Stadium, will be determined this weekend as the networks have exercised the third of their four six-day window opportunities.

There are five network television broadcast options for West Virginia’s game against Oklahoma on Nov. 19, on either ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU or FS1., with four time slot options – 12 noon, 3:30 p.m., 7 p.m. or 8 p.m. ET.

… The West Virginia University football coaching staff has named its award winners for outstanding performances in the Mountaineers 48-21 win over Kansas at Milan Puskar Center on Saturday, Nov. 5. The Offensive Champion was Elijah Wellman; the Defensive Champion was Noble Nwachukwu; and the Special Teams Champion was Marvin Gross. sons.

… The local sports world was saddened to hear of the untimely passing of former Williamson High School all-state basketball player Chris Carroll. The 6-foot-8 Carroll helped the Wolfpack win its last state championship in basketball back in 2001. He went on to play at Pikeville College. I know his former classmates and teammates have heavy hearts.
