According to WXCC radio sports personality Joe Kinzer’s fantastic research, Mingo Central was the first opponent to shut-out Wayne at home since Bluefield did so in the 2002 state semi-finals. It was the Miners impressive 34-0 win Friday night for the team’s first 5-0 start in school history.
That win was at historic Pioneer Field in Wayne and was the first ever win at Wayne for MCHS. It is also the first ever season (in the 6th year) the Miners beat both Wayne and Tolsia in the same season.
… It is hard to believe that we are already past the midway point in the high school football season. Where does the time go?
… Aaron Banks, a track star at Mingo Central has been offered a track and scholastic scholarship at the University of Charleston. Banks also plays basketball for the Miners. This will be his senior season.
… Cason Kissinger, the kicker for Class AAA Huntington, is the son of former Williamson High School athlete Mark Kissinger. The young Kissinger has good range for field goals and kicks extra points for the Highlanders. Mark played for the Wolfpack back in the 1980s.
…. Former South Charleston and Marshall football star Aaron Dobson recently signed with the Detroit Lions. Dobson was drafted by the Patriots and played there for a couple of seasons, but has battled injuries. He was cut in the pre-season and finally signed with the Lions.
Dobson, if he can stay healthy, could still be a productive wide receiver in the NFL.

For the first time since last September, the West Virginia University football team has returned to the national top 25.WVU checked in Sunday at No. 20 in the Amway coaches poll and at No. 22 in the Associated Press sports writers poll. The Mountaineers are 4-0 with Saturday’s come-from-behind win over Kansas State, the first time a Dana Holgorsen coached WVU team has defeated the Wildcats.
…. The West Virginia University football coaching staff has named its award winners for outstanding performances in the Mountaineers 17-16 win against Kansas State at Milan Puskar Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 1.The offensive champion was Justin Crawford; the defensive champion was Kyzir White and the special teams champion Nana Kyeremeh.
… The Big 12 Conference has announced that WVU’s Saturday, Oct. 15, Big 12 Conference football game against Texas Tech at Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock, Texas, will be televised on FS1 at noon ET.
