WILLIAMSON — The 5th annual Coal Dust Run run/walk 5k will be covering runners with coal dust in the near future.
One of Williamson’s most signature ‘fun runs’ is right around the corner and those who plan on registering get a discount if they pre-register early. Event organizers have announced that those who pre-register before the end of July get a discounted registration price of only $20 dollars. Once the month of August hits the price will raise to $25 dollars.
Runner have been enjoying the local race since the summer of 2012. One of the event organizers, Natalie Taylor said, “It started out as just a local fun run for everyone around here because coal affected everyone and every business around here in some way. The first year we had about 89 people run or walk but the second year we had 300 people show up. It picked up faster than we ever expected because we only had about 150 shirts made. It has just been taking off since then and everyone has so much fun with it.”
Taylor also said, “We get a very diverse crowd, we have veteran marathoners participate and people who just come to walk the course. It’s a very good entry level 5k for those who are thinking about running more. We don’t time anything so there is non of that for anyone to worry about, it’s all about coming out and having fun.”
Runners will receive a vintage style t-shirt that has a historical design, also racers will receive a finishing medal that will be made from a piece of Coal Mine scrip.
The event will also offer a new way to run the race that has been picking up steam recently, and that is the virtual run. Racers can sign up online and run the race wherever and whenever they choose, while still receiving a shirt and medal for the race.
The event has a presenting sponsor with Marcum Law Firm but also still have sponsorship space available.
The race will take place on Saturday, Sept 10. at 6:30 p.m. in downtown Williamson W.Va. If you’re interested you can sign up online or get a registration form at the Williamson Coal House located in downtown next to the courthouse.
