The Mingo Central Alumni Games will be held Friday May 27 and Saturday May 28. The basketball event Friday starts at 5 p.m. tickets are $6 for adults and $4 students. The football game is Saturday at 8 p.m. with tickets $8 for adults and $6 students. All of the events are at Mingo Central. Proceeds go to the Miners football program.
… Congratulations to the Mingo Central track team for a great showing at the Class AA state meet. Tyshira Joplin finished second in Class AA in the 100 meter dash in the state finals. Aaron Banks finished No. 6 in the 100-meter dash in Class AA. Joplin placed 4th in the long jump.
Banks and Garrett Moore did very well in the long jump and were ranked as two of the top broad jumpers in the state. They both routinely jumped in the 20-foot range in that activity. They finished 4th and 5th in the state in the long jump in the Class AA division.
… MCHS assistant coach Joey Fields said he and head coach Yogi Kinder are going to start a Mingo Central Hall of Fame. More details will be released on this venture at a later date.
… Longtime Poca boys basketball coach Allen Osborne is stepping down after 38 seasons with the Dots.
Osborne led Poca to two state championships over that span, the first in 1997 and the second in 2015. The 1997 Class AA championship team finished 21-5, while the 2015 AA title team went a perfect 27-0. Poca finished as the Class AA state runner-up this past season.
Osborne finishes his career with the Dots posting over 600 total wins. The 2016-2017 Poca team is expected to have a lot of returning talent as all-state standouts Elijah Cuffee and Luke Frampton both would be heading into their senior seasons. The Dots are in the Cardinal Conference with Mingo Central, Chapmanville, Scott and Logan.
… West Virginia University football coach Dana Holgorsen announced this past week that redshirt sophomore running back Donte Thomas-Williams has been dismissed from the program for a violation of team rules.
Donte Thomas-WilliamsThomas-Williams played in four games as a redshirt freshman, rushing 14 times for 43 yards with a long carry of 12 yards against Maryland. He was initially suspended back in April heading into spring practice for “conduct detrimental to the team.
… WVU Football Coach Dana Holgorsen’s statement updating the media on the status of transfer quarterback Will Grier:
“Will Grier enrolled for classes here at WVU on May 16. With the timing of his transfer, and the requirements that he has to finish from the NCAA, I cannot officially confirm his eligibility until the summer of 2017. However, I fully anticipate him being eligible for the opening game of the 2017 season.”
… The Mountaineers received some help for their depleted secondary. They have added former Iowa cornerback and graduate transfer Maurice Fleming.
He spent four years with the Hawkeyes, redshirting in his first season and then playing in 33 games over the next three years. He finished the 2015 season in a primary backup role with 17 tackles and five pass breakups in 14 games.
