GILBERT – The Mingo Central Miners and the Sherman Tide played in the defensive battle of the year on Tuesday evening and Sherman edged the Miners 4-3 in seven innings.

Mingo made the first strike with a score by Taylor Thornsbury in the first inning. Thorsnbury landed on base with a single because of a Sherman error. Sherman returned a run in the fourth inning when J.T. Hensley crossed the plate after a double landed him on second. The game continued back and forth with both sides connecting with the ball but the defenses were standing strong.

Neither team could get across the plate until the seventh inning when Mingo scored two runs and Sherman scored three runs. Michael Dotson made the first score in the seventh for the Miners and Andrew Allen scored the second run. For the Tide it was J.T. Hensley, L. Daniels, and J. Keyes crossing the plate.

Andrew Allen led the miners from the mound by closing the game with three strikeouts and no walks. Keyes played from the mound for the Tide with 12 strikeouts and two hit batters.

The Miners also played a tough game on Monday evening as they hosted the Scott Skyhawks but were bested 7-5.

The Miners played tough through the entire game but the Skyhawks got the win thanks to two extra runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Both teams scored one run in the third, two runs in the fourth, then the Skyhawks snuck in a run in the sixth and gained three runs in the seventh whilt the Miners could only muster two runs in the seventh.

Taylor Thornsbury scored the first run for the Miners after a single, and then Ethan Collins scored one run in the fourth from a Jeremy Harrison homerun RBI over left center. Andrew Allen and Cole Ellis scored the final two runs for the Miners.

Thornsbury finished the game with one single. Andrew Allen went 4 for 4 from the batter’s box with two doubles and two singles. Kenny Allen went 3 for 4 from the batter’s box with two doubles and one single.

Thomas Harmon closed the game pitching for the Miners after Kenny Allen and Nathan Butcher had worked through the earlier innings.
