GOODY, K.y. – The Belfry Pirates were halted on Saturday by a stout Chapmanville Tiger team by a final score of 11-6.
The Pirates fell victim to the “error bug” on Saturday and the Tigers took full advantage. Belfry is now 1-1 against teams in W.Va. after beating the Man Hillbillies last week. The Tigers were a different bread of team and they showed the Pirates why.
A four run first inning for the Tigers set the tone. Josh Zigmond , Josh Bazilla, and Tyler Shannon recorded RBI’s while Noah Dingess and Chris Bailey both had singles in the Tigers first at bat.
The Pirates were silent on offense until the third when they came back with three runs but the Tigers got two runs and kept a three run lead. Zigmond and Shannon both had RBI’s in the third. Austin Woolum scored first for the pirates on a bad pick-off attempt at third base. Nate Sanger knocked in Tyler Fields and Cameron Catron on a two-run single.
Belfry added one more run in the fourth to close the Tigers lead to two runs; it was Devin Varney who crossed the plate. The pirates scored one run in the sixth and one run in the seventh but the Tigers compiled five runs in the last two innings to win by five scores.
Alex Berry led the Tigers from the mound and finished the game with 11 strikeouts and only three walks. Garrett Fannin pitched for the Pirates.
The Pirates now fall to a record of 11-4 while the Tigers rise up to 14-2. The Pirates will host Prestonsburg tonight at 6:00 p.m.
