GOODY, K.y. – The Belfry Lady Pirates added another win to their record, and a regional one at that, on Thursday evening as they beat the Paintsville Lady Tigers by a score of 8-4.
The win wasn’t just big for the girls on the field; it was big for the leader in the dugout as well. Head Coach Ryan Chapman reached his 100th career win; he has been the head coach for the Lady Pirates since 2011.
The Lady Pirates got off to a slow start but rallied in the end to double the Lady Tigers score. Paintsville scored three runs in the first inning but was silent on offense until the fifth inning when they added one more run. Once the Lady Pirates got going in the third inning they didn’t slow down until the game was finished.
In the first inning, Elizabeth Williams singled to deep short and then stole second. Anna Keaton was hit by a pitch and stole second after Williams made it to third. Jordan Mulcahy recorded an RBI on a grounder to second and Hope Hayden followed with an RBI to center field. The Lady Tigers jumped out to a two run lead.
The Lady Pirates found a jolt of energy in the third inning when Kyra Stafford stepped to the plate with two outs and rounded the bases to third on a costly Paintsville error. Kendra Gannon knocked her home on an RBI single to left field. Kailee Rash hit one over the center fielder’s head that got Gannon across the plate and then she scored on a bad throw to put the Lady Pirates up by one run.
In the top of the fourth inning Alex Smith singled to center field and then made it to second on the next play. Stafford knocked her home on a shot to right field and she was safe on first. Gannon knocked in Stafford on a deep shot to right field.
Belfry was up 5-4 heading into the top of the fifth when Smith hit a two- run single to left field that got Savannah Wilson and Kayla Christian across the plate.
In the top of the sixth inning Gannon added one more score for the Lady Pirates after Taylor Maynard hit one deep into left field. The Lady Tigers scored one more run in the seventh but the Lady Pirates got three out before any more damage could be done.
Gannon was solid on the mound with eight strikeouts and two walks; she was also 4 for 4 from the batters box.
The Lady Pirates improve to a record of 8-7 on the season while Paintsville falls to a record of 7-7. The Lady Pirates were scheduled to play in the Lyndell Potter tournament held at Pikeville that was played Friday and Saturday. Those stories will be available in the beginning of next week.
