WHITESBURG, Ky – The Belfry Pirates are sailing along as they added another win to the record on Friday when they defeated Letcher Central 8-7 and moved into a record of 7-2.
The Pirates jumped out to an early lead by scoring three runs in the first, two runs in the second and two runs in the fourth. The Cougars made a rally late in the game scoring six runs in the sixth inning but the Pirates defense held them to only one run in the seventh to clinch the win.
Belfry started off the scoring when Garrett Fannin got on base after a bunt down the third base line. Cameron Catron followed with a single to left field and then stole second base. With runners on second and third “big” Austin Dotson stepped to the plate as the clean-up hitter. Dotson drilled one to left-center that got both Fannin and Catron across the plate. Colton Cross scored the third run for the Pirates in the first.
The batting order returned to the top in the second inning and Fannin stepped to the plate again. Fannin sent one screaming over the center field fence for a two-run home run after Avery Browning was hit by a pitch. The Pirates were up 5-0 at the end of the second inning.
The Pirates top of the order was not finished making magic happen when Dotson hit a two-run double RBI in the fourth that knocked in Fannin and Catron who had both got on base with walks.
The sixth inning was where the Cougars put some sweat on the Pirates foreheads. Israel Terry hit a sacrifice fly that got Johnathan Potter across the plate for the first Letcher Central score. Keaston Maggard had gotten on base from a walk and stole second when Max Baker hit an RBI single to center field. Dalton Dollarhide and Christian Broderdrop both walked loading the bases with Baker on third. Logan Gibbs hit a three run double to left field and then scored on a Trevor Hardin RBI to right field.
Belfry scored one more run in the seventh when Tyler Fields crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly from Devin Varney.
Fannin had pitched five innings for the Pirates and then coach Hagee called in Browning to close. The Pirates held the Cougars to only one run in the seventh to keep their one run win.
The Pirates were scheduled to play East Ridge on Monday and then travel to Pike Central tonight for a game starting at 6:00 p.m. After that they will host Pike Central for another district matchup on Thursday.
