WILLIAMSON – The Williamson Daily News would like to announce the results of the All-Area boys’ basketball team from the 2015-2016 season.
Players from Tug Valley, Mingo Central, Belfry, Phelps and Sheldon Clark were available for selection. Tug Valley landed three players on the first team, Mingo Central landed one player and Belfry had one player selected.
On the first team will be Jeremy Dillon (TV), Tyler May (TV), Calvin Blankenship (TV), Dalton Hatfield (MC), and Garrett Fannin (B). Dillon, May, and Blankenship were pivotal to the success of the Tug Valley Panthers this season. The Panthers made another state tournament run and made it to the semi-finals against Wheeling Central. The Panthers season ended after a 69-47 semi-final loss to Wheeling Central, after beating Tucker County 67-55 in the opening round of the state tournament.
These three players were on fire both offensively and defensively through most of the Panthers season. Heading into the sectional and regional tournament the Panthers were defeating teams by 30 points or more thanks to the play of Dillon, May and Blankenship.
Mingo Central had a rough season under the direction of first year head coach Garland “Rabbit” Thompson, but Hatfield battled through and was the Miners’ leading scorer. The Miners only won two games this season and lost in the sectional tournament to Wayne by a final score of 51-46. Hatfield however, had an exceptional senior season.
Garrett Fannin was Belfry’s leading scorer during his senior season as a Pirate. Belfry lost the final game of the season to Johnson Central in the opening round of 15th Regional Tournament by a final score of 62-53. Fannin finished the season ranking third on Belfry’s all-time scoring list; he ended the season with 546 total points.
Dillon and May were only sophomores this season, but showed tremendous maturity on the court. Dillon was a first team selection to the Class A All-State squad, while May was a member of the second team. This is voted on by the W.Va. Sports Writers Association of several sports editors in the Mountain State.
All five players personify the meaning of a complete basketball player by showcasing talent, wisdom, sportsmanship and appreciation for the game.
All five players were selected for the first team All-Area team after last season as well.
