GOODY, Ky. – Belfry defeated Phelps 11-0 for a regular season district win in high school baseball action on Friday.

Belfry took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning with two outs. Austin Dotson singled to right, then he stole 2nd base and Tyler Fields RBI single to center brought in Austin Woolum, who was a courtesy runner. Then Nate Sanger cracked an RBI single to left field to bring in Fields.

In the Belfry half of the 2nd inning Keilan Carr walked, then stole both 2nd and 3rd bases. Kaleb Taylor reached safely on infield error, but picked up an RBI to bring in Carr. Garrett Fannin’s RBI single to center brought in another Pirate run and Dotson smashed an RBI double to left field to make it 5-0.

In the 3rd frame, Belfry had another two out rally. Taylor singled to center, then Fannin was hit by a pitch and Cameron Catron walked to load the bases. Then Dotson, a junior, smacked a 2-run single to center.

Belfry scored four more runs in the 4th to get the 10-run mercy rule victory. Sanger singled to left, then Colton Cross singled to center and stole second base, and Sanger scored on an error. Woolum had a pinch hit single to left field, then Carr walked loading bases and Taylor had an RBI groundout to second base. Fannin then had an RBI groundout to third base.

Phelps got hits from Peyton Rife, Blake Hurley, and Bailey Hurley and all were singles.

Taylor got the mound win for BHS Coach Michael Hagy’s squad, while Christian Mounts took the loss for Coach Zack Avina of Phelps.

Belfry was scheduled to travel to South Floyd on Monday and play host to MaGoffin County on Tuesday.

Mingo Central wins first game

Miners 4, Phelps 1

PHELPS, Ky. – The Mingo Central Miners picked up their first win of the season with a 4-1 defeat of the Phelps Hornets on Friday.

Coach Jared Lester was pleased with freshman hurler Andrew Allen who pitched a complete game for his first high school victory on the varsity level.

No other details or stats were reported from the game.

Herbert Hoover 10, Mingo Central 0

FALLING ROCK – Matt Justice and Colten Rollyson each went 2 for 2 and drove in three runs Saturday as Herbert Hoover earned a 10-0 prep baseball victory against visiting Mingo Central in five innings.

Also for the Huskies (4-3), Tanner Purdy was 2 for 3 with an RBI.

Thomas Harmon doubled for the Miners (1-4).

The Miners were scheduled to play ACA at Lefty Hamilton Park today (Tuesday).
