GOODY, Ky. — Big news in local sports! Local Belfry standout Austin Dotson has verbally committed to the University of Kentucky after being offered a scholarship during a visit last Saturday.
Dotson was an offensive Tackle for the Belfry Pirates and was pivotal in their chase for a third straight Class-AAA State Championship. Dotson steps in as Uk’s first offensive lineman commit of the 2017 class. His 6-foot-6, 290 pound frame is something that all major colleges are looking for in a player.
Dotson was not well-known outside of this area. There were other schools that had been showing interest but Dotson accepted the look from Kentucky. The life of a offensive lineman is not glamorous, there aren’t many stats to build a pedigree. The only thing available is usually highlight tapes of the players.
Dotson’s performance throughout the 2015 season earned him a second look from people who know football.
The Pirates finished last season with a record of 14-1 overall. The championship game was held in Bowling Green Ky. on the University of Western Kentucky’s campus. Belfry capped off another historic season by defeating Lexington Catholic in a shutout, the final score was 43-0 as the Pirates showed absolutely no mercy.
Dotson began his football career at Belfry as a sophomore and still has his senior season left to play. Belfry is undoubtedly a run dominated team, there isn’t much film on the Pirates pass protection abilities. despite this fact Dotson was noticed for his athletic ability and physical play.
Head Coach Phillip Haywood told KentuckySports.com, “We knew that he had a lot of potential. He’s just improved by leaps and bounds over the course of the last year. I think, as the season went on and more people started seeing him play, they realized that this guy is a pretty good football player.”
