HURRICANE – The Tug Valley Panthers finished off the regular season with a win over Class 3A Hurricane High School on Thursday night in a close game winning by a final score of 55-53.
The Redskins jumped ahead in the first period with a score of 11-10. Tyler May hit a 3-pointer to boost the Panthers while Ryan Midkiff scored nine points for the Redskins in the first period. Tug Valley won the second period14-12.
Calvin Blankenship and Chandler Runyon hit a pair of 3-pointers in the second period to help send the Panthers into halftime with a one point lead of 24-23. The Panthers increased their lead in the third period. The Panthers won the third period 21-16. Calvin Blankenship and Jeremy Dillon combined for 16 of the Panthers 21 points during the third period.
Hurricane had a fourth period rally beating the Panthers 14-10, but the effort feel short and the Panthers walked away with a win. Calvin Blankenship led the Panthers with 16 points. Midkiff led the redskins with 24 points.
Tug Valley finishes the regular season with a record of 16-3. The only three losses for the Panthers this season were to George Washington during the Hatfield – McCoy Shootout, Saint Joseph Central, and Wesley Christian.
The Panthers landed in the No. 1 seed of the Class A, Region 3, Section 2 Tournament. The first two games were played Saturday night. No. 5 Sherman faced No. 4 Greater Beckley Christian (GBC), and No. 3 Man faced No. 6 Montcalm. Tug Valley will face the winner of Sherman and GBC on Tuesday night at Tug Valley. Van will face the winner of Man and Montcalm on Tuesday night at Van.
The finals will be played on Friday night as the two winners from Tuesday night will battle for the sectional crown.
