RED JACKET – The (2-19) Mingo Central Miners lost in a 31 point blowout to the (15-3) Tug Valley Panthers on Tuesday night at Mingo Central High School by a final score of 67-36.
The Miners have had a tough go, this time around, in the 2016 season. The Tug Valley Panthers have had some minor hiccups but have ultimately been dominant against most opponents. Tug Valley held the lead throughout the entire game despite the Miners best efforts.
The Panthers came out of the gate playing sluggish, but Mingo Central was playing the same. Miners Head Coach Garland Thompson was forced to call three time outs in the first period to get the team headed in the right direction. All hope was lost when Tug Valley’s Chandler Runyon hit back to back 3-pointers to extend the Panthers score from five to 11 points. Tug Valley finished off the period with a final score of 16-7 over the Miners.
After Runyon’s six point momentum burst, the Panthers continued to rain down points and never looked back. At halftime the score was 31-18 in favor of Tug Valley. The Panthers scored 36 points in the second half while the Miners could only muster another 18 points for the half.
The Panthers were led in scoring by Jeremy Dillon and Runyon who both had 13 points each. Dillon also had five assists and eight rebounds. Calvin Blankenship finished the night scoring 11 points and he also had five assists for the Panthers.
Mingo Central was led in scoring by Daniel Buchanon who had 12 points; no other Miner scored double digit points during the game. Mingo Central finished the night shooting only 26 percent from the floor and making 4 of 6 free throws.
The regular season is over for the Miners and it has definitely been a heartbreaker. Tug Valley has one game remaining against Hurricane tonight (Thursday) before they hang up their regular season uniforms and put on their tournament jerseys.
Mingo Central has yet to beat the Tug Valley in the five years of the schools existence. The Panthers are now 11-0 all-time against the Miners in boys’ basketball.
Tug Valley will enter the 2016 Region 4, Section 2, Class A Tournament next Tuesday, they will play the winner of Greater Beckley Christian and Sherman; that game will be played on Saturday Feb, 27. Tug Valley has earned the No.1 seed in the Section 2 tournament and has been ranked in the top 5 in Class A all year.
Mingo Central will take on Wayne Saturday in the Class AA sectional at the Logan Fieldhouse.
