WILLIAMSON – The 2016 Mingo County Middle School boys’ basketball tournament turned into a shot for shot battle between the Lenore Rangers and the Kermit Blue Devils. The Rangers earned the victory with a final score of 41-37.

The game started off easy until Kermit exploded on a 9-0 run from hitting three 3-pointers in a row. In a two minute frame Braxton Hanshaw, Tyler Chafin, and Zack Savage all hit 3-pointers until Lenore’s Jody Sorrell hit one of his own to get the Rangers back on track. Kermit finished the first period ahead of Lenore 15-7.

Lenore entered the second period firing back and eventually took over the lead at the 3:45 mark with a score of 16-15. Lenore’s nine point run to start off the second period turned into a back and forth match between both teams, with the lead changing with every shot. Lenore pulled away slightly at the end of the quarter but Kermit fought back to enter halftime only down one point, the score was 23-22.

In the third period Lenore created a four point cushion despite the defensive battle on the court. Lenore only scored six points in the third period and Kermit only scored four points. The game grew more intense with every minute as the crowd and the players grew stronger.

Kermit scored first in the fourth and final period to cut away the Rangers lead to one point. Kermit’s Ethan Colegrove was fouled at the 4:02 mark and was sent to the line for two shots. Colegrove made both shots and put the Blue Devils up by one point. Lenore answered when Caleb May was fouled on a rebound and put back that gave him the opportunity for a three point play, may nailed the free throw and put the Rangers back ahead by two points.

Kermit tied up the ball game at 34 points at 2:23, and took the lead back with just under two minutes to play when Nick Sartin drilled a 3-pointer that put the Blue devil fans on their feet. Lenore answered right back as Sorrell set the nets on fire with a long 3-pointer to put the rangers back up by two points with a score of 39-37.

During the final minute of play the Kermit Blue Devils were forced to play catch up and foul in order to get the ball back. Lenore nailed two of the last four free throws of the game to keep the lead and end the game with a score of 41-37.

Caleb May led the Rangers in scoring with 14 points, Kermit was led by Ethan Colegrove who had 15 points.
