MCHS falls to Wayne, Fairland



HUNTINGTON – The Fairland Dragons downed Mingo Central 61-47 in the Huntington Invitational on Saturday night.

Fairland (13-3) turned in a sluggish performance, but defeated the struggling Miners (1-14) in event played at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena.

Fairland led 23-12 after Kollin Van Horn scored 4:28 before halftime, but Mingo Central chipped away, taking advantage of poor shooting by the Dragons. The Miners took a 39-38 lead on Dalton Hatfield’s basket with 2:07 left in the third quarter.

Mingo Central’s lead did not last long as Luke Thomas sank a 3-pointer to give Fairland a lead it didn’t relinquish.

Van Horn led the Dragons with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Thomas scored 16 and Isaiah Howell added 14 points and nine rebounds. Former Mingo Central Miner Kebo Cunningham scored nine for Fairland.

Hatfield’s 17 points paced the Miners. Aaron Banks chipped in 10 for MCHS, while Deonte Joplin chipped in five, and Daniel Buchanon and Canaan Fletcher each chipped in six points for Coach Garland “Rabbit” Thompson’s squad. Buchanan had 13 rebounds for the Miners.

Banks was the MVP of the game for Mingo Central.

Wayne 55, Mingo Central 46

WAYNE – The Wayne Pioneers defeated the Mingo Central Miners 55-46 on Friday night at Wayne (5-1) for a Cardinal Conference win for the home team.

Mingo Central only trailed 20-19 at the half, but the Pioneers outscored the Miners 17-13 in the third quarter and 18-14 in the final period to pull away with the win.

Senior Dalton Hatfield led Mingo Central with 14 points, while Daniel Buchanan chipped in 11 and 10 boards and Josh Reed scored eight for the Miners. Aaron Banks added six for MCHS.

Mingo Central is slated to travel to Sissonville on Friday and play host to Wayne on Saturday.
