MT. HOPE – The Tug Valley Panthers stay perfect on the season after defeating Greater Beckley Christian (GBC) on the road by a score of 72-59.
Big time efforts from Tyler May, Jeremy Dillon and Calvin Blankenship helped bring the Panthers to a record of 6-0. May had the hot hand all night as he finished with 29 points. He shot 50 percent from behind the arc making 6 of 12, 3-pointers, and making all five of his foul shots. Dillon finished the night with a double-double from scoring 17 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. C. Blankenship was close to a double-double but finished the night one rebound shy adding nine rebounds to his 15 point total.
Both teams came out of the gate shooting away. The Panthers barely outscored GBC 21-20 at the end of the first period. May nailed three 3’s during the first period while Dillon and C. Blankenship added 4 points apiece.
The scoring action slowed down slightly during the second period but the Panthers kept the lead once again. Tug Valley outscored the Crusaders 16-13 in the second period to give them a four point lead heading into the locker room.
The Panthers lost the third period when GBC outscored them 12-10 but, the Panthers rallied back in the fourth and final period to score 25 points to GBC’s 14. Dillon put in a lot of work during the fourth period to push the Panthers score up 25 points. Dillon went 5 for 6 from the free throw line and scored nine points. Dillon also recorded three assists and five rebounds in the fourth period.
The Panthers have yet to be stopped as they approach midway of the season. However, there are some big games for the Panthers during the month of January. Tug Valley will face Wesley Christian once during the month and Saint Joseph Central twice. Wesley Christian is creating some big basketball buzz about their scoring ability. The Panthers will play Saint Joseph for the second time at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena in Huntington.
