RUSSELL – The (2-7) Belfry Pirates lost another one on the road to (6-8) Lewis County over the weekend by a final score of 62-51 at the Marvin Meredith Classic.
The Pirates tried to make a game of it but outscoring Lewis County in the second and fourth periods but the slow start in the first proved to be the deciding factor in the game. Lewis County jumped out to a big lead after doubling Belfry’s score in the first period.
The score at the end of the first period was 14-6 with Lewis County in control. The Pirates came fighting back in the second by outscoring Lewis County 15-13. Lewis County held a six point lead over the Pirates at Halftime with a score of 27-21.
The Lions took back over in the third period by outscoring the Pirates 18-10. The Pirates made an effort during the final period by outscoring the Lions 20-17 but the effort was not enough. With the final score of 62-51 the Pirates fall once again.
Belfry finished the game shooting 33 percent from the field going 17-51 and 8-15 from beyond the 3-point line. Belfry shot just over 50 percent from the free-throw line making 9-14. Belfry had 20 turnovers during the game. Lewis County shot 25-56 from the field and shot 7-15 from the free throw line.
Next up for the pirates is a trip to Pikeville tonight to face the Panthers at 7:30 p.m.
