INEZ, Ky – The Tug Valley Panthers moved to a record of 3-0 Saturday after defeating the hometown Sheldon Clark Cardinals by a score of 76-59.
Tug Valley scored 52 points in the second half helping them gain a win over Sheldon Clark. The first half was close for both teams but the Cardinals entered halftime with a six point lead over the Panthers. The Cardinals outscored Tug Valley 18-12 in the first period and the Panthers came back to tie the Cardinals in the second period with both teams netting 12 points.
The score at halftime was 30-24 in favor of Sheldon Clark. After halftime the Panthers came out and scored 52 points while the Cardinals could only muster 29 points. The Panthers pulled together as a team to rack up the points in the third period.
Calvin Blankenship led the way for the Panthers during the third period with 9 points; hitting three field goals and one 3-pointer. Jeremy Dillon also hit three shots close to the basket to add six points to the score. Dillon, Calvin Blankenship, Chandler Runyon, Tyler May, Corbin Oliver, and Garrett Brown all contributed to the Panthers outscoring the Cardinals 27-10 in the third period.
The Cardinals pushed back but ultimately fell short as the Panthers outscored Sheldon Clark 25-19 in the final period. Runyon led the way for the Panthers in the fourth period netting 15 points off of four field goals and hitting two 3-pointers.
Runyon ended up leading the Panthers in scoring, thanks to his fourth period effort, and finishing the night with 21 points. Runyon shot 88 percent from the field hitting seven of his eight shots from inside the arc while making two out of five 3-pointers for a total 69 percent on shooting. Runyon also added two assists, four rebounds, and two steals.
Dillon finished the night with 19 points after making five field goals and two 3-pointers. Dillon also added six assists and nine rebounds. Calvin Blankenship added 14 points, three assists and six rebounds during the game. Garrett Brown added eight points, Tyler May added five points and two assists and Johnathan Blankenship added three points, two assists and two rebounds to the Panthers stats.
Tug Valley had a good night; shooting 55 percent from inside the 3-point line making 21 of their 38 shots, shooting 39 percent from the three point line making nine of their 23 attempts and shooting 49 percent all together making 30 out of 61 shots. The Panthers shot 54 percent from the free throw line making seven of their 13 shots.
The Panthers had 17 total assists, 28 rebounds and committed 18 fouls.
Bradley Dalton led the Cardinals in scoring with 23 points during the game. Dalton made five 3-pointers and sank all four of his foul shots. Drew Hatfield added nine points for Sheldon Clark and added seven assists. Trent Vanover added seven points and David Cantrell had four points and five rebounds on the night.
The Cardinals shot 37 percent making only 19 of their 51 shots. The Cardinals did shoot 79 percent from the free throw line making 15 of their 19 foul shots. The Cardinals finished the game with 20 rebounds, 11 fouls and 16 turnovers that the Panthers capitalized on to get the win.
The Panthers have won the first three games of the season and have Notre Dame on the road on Tuesday Dec 22. at 7:00 p.m.
