Panthers win season opener


Tug Valley cruises past Richwood 87-30

RICHWOOD – The Tug Valley Panthers had an excellent season debut against Richwood on Friday as the Panthers rolled past the Lumberjacks with a final score of 87-30.

The Panthers controlled the game throughout its entirety; during the first quarter the Panthers outscored the Lumberjacks 28-4 and 17-6 in the second quarter. Calvin Blankenship led the way for the Panthers during the first quarter scoring 8 points, Johnathan Blankenship and Tyler May both netted 7 points apiece.

During the Panthers second quarter command Calvin Blankenship and Johnathan Blankenship kept the Panthers ahead with four points apiece. At the Half the Panthers had a 35 point lead over the Lumberjacks with a score of 45-10.

The third quarter went smoothly for the Panthers as well, as they outscored the Lumberjacks 19-4. The third quarter leaders for the Panthers were Johnathan Blankenship with seven points, Jeremy Dillon with four points and May with four points.

There were no surprises in the final quarter of play as the Panthers outscored Richwood 23-16. Tug Valley Head Coach Ed May pulled the starters during the fourth quarter but that didn’t stop the Panthers bench from putting up some points. Brett Ooten led the Panthers during the final quarter with 11 points, after making three of his four 3-point attempts and one shot from inside the arc.

The Richwood Lumberjacks was led in scoring by Griffen Synder with 17 points.

The Tug Valley Panthers were led in scoring by Johnathan Blankenship with 18 points, May was close behind with 17 points; he sank three of his 3-point shots, Calvin Blankenship had 12 points and Ooten had 11 points off the bench. Dillon led the team in rebounds with nine total.

Now that the Panthers have begun the season with a win they can focus on what’s ahead. During the month of December the Panthers have four remaining scheduled games; they have one home game against Cross Lanes Christian on Dec. 18 followed by three away games. The Panthers will play Sheldon Clark , Notre Dame, and Belfry all on the road.
