The 2015 Class 3A Russel Athletic/ KHSAA Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl is officially here. The first round will take place this Friday and the road to the state championship will begin.
In the first round the hometown (9-1) Belfry Pirates will face off against the (5-5) Bath County Wildcats. The Pirates only loss of the season was to Cabell-Midland, one of the biggest and most talented teams that West Virginia has to offer, and after shutting out Johnson Central during the last game of the regular season the Pirates are rolling into the playoffs fast and loud. Bath County is led by Nathan Swartz who leads the team in rushing yards and scoring. The game will take place on Nov, 6. at 7:30 p.m. at Cam Stadium.
Middlesboro will travel to Shelby Valley for the first round of the Class 2A playoffs. The (1-9) Middlesboro Yellowjackets will have their hands full against the (8-2) Shelby Valley Wildcats who only lost to Franklin County and Paintsville this season.
The undefeated (10-0) Paintsville Tigers will be hosting the (3-7) Bracken County Polar Bears for the first round of Class A action. UK football commit Kash Daniels will hope to lead his team past Bracken County and into the second round of the playoffs.
The (4-6) Lynn Camp Wildcats will be traveling to face the (8-2) Pikeville Panthers for another game of Class A action. The Panthers only lost two games this season, the first was to undefeated Paintsville and the second was to Belfry. Daric Pugh will be hoping to continue his outstanding rushing performance into the post season playoffs.
The (4-6) East Ridge Warriors will be traveling to Danville to face the (9-1) Admirals for the first round of Class 2A action. East Ridge’s star running back Brody Johnson will have to face a stout Danville defense and hope for the best if the Warriors expect to advance to the next round of the playoffs.
Prestonsburg will be traveling to face Lexington Christian in the opening round of the Class 2A playoffs. The (5-5) Blackcats will test their offense against the (6-4) Lexington Christian Eagles defense to see who will advance to the next round.
The (3-7) Pike County Central Hawks will be traveling to face the (7-3) Russel Red Devils in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs. Pike Central has had little luck throughout this rebuilding year and will need to bring their best against Russel if they plan on advancing.
The (3-7) Sheldon Clark Cardinals will be traveling to West Carter to face the (8-2) Comets in the opening round of Class 3A action. Senior running back Brandon Butcher will hope to lead the Cardinals past West Carter and into the second round of the playoffs.
South Floyd will be traveling to Williamsburg to take on the Yellow Jackets in Class A action. The (3-7) Raiders will be looking to slip past the (4-6) Yellow Jackets into the second round of the playoffs. Austin Huskey will need to continue his fierce rushing attack for the Raiders in order to make it to the second round.
All games will be played on Nov, 6. at 7:30 p.m. at different locations around the state.
