BUCKLEYS CREEK, Ky – The Belfry Pirates sailed past the Pike County Central Hawks Friday night with a final score of 49-16.
Belfry is now one game away from finishing the regular season, the win over Pike Central is only a small showing of what the Pirates should have in store.
Andrew Fletcher scored the first touchdown of the game with 9:52 left to play in the first quarter when he rushed 50-yards down the right sideline to the end zone. Austin Woolum added the extra point and the Pirates grabbed a quick 6-0 lead.
Xondre Willis scored next for the Pirates with 6:58 left to play in the first quarter on a 35-yard sprint past the defense and into the end zone. Woolum added the extra point and the Pirates score stood at 14.
Willis showed off some speed against the Hawks defense when he sprinted 71-yards downfield for the next score with 2:13 left to play in the first quarter. Woolum added the extra point and the Pirates score was at 21.
With 10:54 left to play in the second quarter Belfry quarterback Noah Corbett connected with Willis on a long 67-yard pass and Willis danced into the end zone with no one near him. Woolum added another extra point and the Pirates held the lead with 28 points.
The Pirates were knocking on the door to the end zone when Justin Adkins scored the next touchdown for the Pirates from 6-yards out with 9:09 left to before halftime. The Pirates played some trickery on the Hawks and snuck in a fake off of the extra point kick to make the score 36-0 by adding the two-point conversion. By scoring 36 unanswered points the Pirates initiated the continuous running clock rule which allows the clock to keep running. At the Half the Pirates led the Hawks 36-0.
Devin Varney scored the first touchdown of the second half for the Pirates after he rushed 51-yards to the end zone with 10:53 left to play in the third quarter. Woolum added the extra point and the Pirates jumped out to a 43-0 lead.
Matt Turnmire scored the first points for Pike Central with 4:11 left to play in the third quarter on a 35-yard catch and score. The Hawks added two points on the conversion and the score was 43-8.
Sophomore running back Taveon Hunter ran the ball 65-yards to the house with 3:03 left to play in the third quarter for the Pirates final score. Devin Wellman missed the extra point and the score stood at 49-8.
Gabe Stanley scored the final touchdown of the game from 3-yards outside the goal line for the Hawks, Pike Central made the two-point conversion to make the final score of the game 49-16.
Despite the Hawks efforts the Pirates proved to be too much for the Class 3A rivals. The Pirates finished with 307-yards rushing on only 13 carries, Belfry scored six rushing touchdowns. The Pirates completed three passes for 73-yards and one passing touchdown.
Willis broke a hundred yards on only two carries during the game and rushed in two scores. Fletcher led the Pirates ground game with four carries in the game for 60-yards.
Cameron Maynard and Nate Sanger led the Pirates on defense with seven total tackles a piece. Anthony Thompson finished with six total tackles and Caleb Elkins also finished with six total tackles. The Pirate defense held the Hawks offense to only 92-yards rushing and 128-yards passing.
Next week the Pirates will move onto powerhouse Johnson Central for the final game of the regular season.
