GOODY, Ky – The Belfry boys’ soccer season has come to an end at the hands of the Pikeville Panthers during Thursday night’s 15th Regional Championship match. The Pirates had made it farther than they ever have before but lost the championship game by a score of 4-3.
The match ended in double overtime during the last set of penalty kicks. The score was 3-3 at the end of regulation play. No goals were scored during the first round of penalty kicks so the match continued with another set.
The rules were if a team led after a series of penalty kicks that team would be the winner. Jose Childers scored the winning kick for Pikeville, Evan Hall attempted a shot for Belfry but the shot was blocked by Pikeville goalie Evan Hall. The Panthers won the match and became the 15th Regional Champions.
The Panthers controlled the match early after Alex Chang and Austin Ball scored two goals for Pikeville in the first 20 minutes of play. The first half ended with the Panthers ahead 2-0.
After the half Ethan Holzapfel scored during the 48th minute on a penalty kick and the Pirates lit up the scoreboard.
Pikeville came firing back after Keegan Williams scored during the 51st minute of play and gave the Panthers a two score lead again.
Wilson Harris and Noah McNamee score two goals before the end of the match to tie it up at the end of regulation play.
Pikeville attempted 14 shots on the goal compared to Belfry’s 32 shots on the goal. Hall had 14 saves during the match for the Panthers; Belfry goalie Dominic Gentile had eight saves during the match.
The Pirates had defeated the Panthers all three matches during the season but Pikeville won the match that truly mattered. The Pirates end the season with a final record of 17-3-1.
